Your SSD Hard Drive?

by Kermit
(El Paso, Texas, USA)

Monte,

You wrote in your book Self Computer repair about a SSD Hard Drive that you installed in one of your computers. That was back in 2008; since installing the SSD, have you had any problems with the Drive and is the Operating System still stable on this drive?

Am thinking of getting one for a Firewall/Proxy Server I plan to build.
Only 30gig.

Thank you.

SSD - Solid State Drive
by: Support

Hello Kermit,

My main computer has a SSD for the boot drive, is a 64 Gig OCZ. It has two partitions at 30 Gig each.

No not one problem with that drive, if you read the Hardware Review section there is a review of one drive that I would stay away from, it was dead when I took it out of the box.

One thing I would suggest you do is put a second drive (the size doesn't matter as long as it is big enough for your Paging File, this will reduce some of the work load on your SSD), check the Performance page in the How To... section.

Good luck with your new server.

Monty, thanks,

Interesting that you say that your SSD is Partitioned for some reason from what I have read I understood that we could not partition a OCZ SSD Hard Drive. Though you did say in your How-To that the drive did come formated.

As for that SSD Drive that you gave bad reviews to I remember the pages on it very well.

The cost of the Newest 30 gig OCZ SSD is less than
$80.00 so guess that I will put 2 in the server with 2 gigs DDR2 800 memory. Want to keep this server stable for as long as I can.

I will be getting a new router for this as the one I am using is a wireless and that is like having 1 foot in clean grass and the other foot in the middile of a cow pie with the number of people in the house that have laptop computers.

Will be using gigabit NIC's from 2 different companies with the project. A 2.6g Celeron dual core processor. OS is Freeware "Astaro Home Proxy Server";

Will have to figure out how to put the wireless router behind the Firewall/Proxy Serve and asign an IP address to it from the server I think??? Haven't got that far yet.

Thanks for the info. again.

Kermit
