Windows Vista will not start

by George
(Otsego, MI)

I am trying to repair an HP Pavilion with the Windows Vista OS.

The computer will start up and I can hear the HD spinning up but the OS never loads and a blank black screen appears. I have tried using the Ultimate boot disk and the Windows Vista disk and the still am not able to do anything. I have checked the voltage on the PS, reseated the memory, and disconnected and reconnected the MB connectors. There are not cards in the PCI slots. The fans are both running fine. On note, I do not hear a post beep when turning the power on. I have not come across a system that would not boot from a boot disk so I am puzzled by this.

I repair computers as a hobby for friends and family but maybe when I retire from my job I will explore computer repair as a part time business.

Thanks for any and all help.
Regards,
Geo

Black Screen
by: kermit

I am also an amature computer repair person, 2 things come to mind. A failed internal video card. But not getting any post beeps is interesting. Is there and external buzzer or a speaker in the case. Have noted that many newer montherboards have the speaker built in. Tower my sons had died and would only show a black screen but got beep codes. Hard drive and fans all worked.

Failed Motherboard or processor. Recently I had returned to me an Acer Aspire One Netbook laptop that had died this is one that I bought my son. It to would turn on the fans and hard drive made some noise. Fried motherboard and hard drive.

Computer powers up but doesn't load OS
by: Support

Hello George,

If the computer will not start from the internal hard drive or with a boot cd then the cause is closer to a motherboard problem.

You can start your trouble shooting here:

Troubleshooting Motherboard problems

I would suspect either a memory module, the processor, or even the motherboard has failed.

Hope this helps
