Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 r2 Operating Systems?

by Kermit Bengtson
(El Paso,Texas, U.S.A)

Hello Monte,
Been a while since I have written; have been reviewing information on your websit, your ebooks "Build A Server" and DIY- Computer-Repair Unleashed; on NAS Servers. In one of the publications you mention that the "NAS Server" should have Windows Server 2003 as the opreating system. I have been researching the internet and have learned that there are several sources for "Windows Server 2003" and "Windows Server 2003r2" at greatly reduced cost. (Install CD and 5 COA's) Research also indicates that MS will be supporting certain service packs untill 2015???

What is the differance of these operating systems; and what kind of servers can we create using the server install CD? I know that we can purchase server cases server motherboards and all related parts or just build a computer using a regular mother board case etc.

I found an interesting Intel Server Motherboard, it is no longer fully supported by Intel but research indicates that they still support the drivers etc.; "Intel Enter Server SE7221BA1E P4 E7221 ATX Motherboard These motherboards can be purchased at 3 different sites for less that $50.00 am thinking of building my servers with this board; uses: P4 775 Processor up to Extreme Eddition p4's as well as Celeron D processors. There are still a large range of P4's including dual core's on the market from 1.4 to 3.70+g mean price for 3.4 gig at around $50.00. Four sata ports on the board. Introduced in 2006. Supports Raid 0;1;10. intergrated graphics video and sound 3 pci slots, 1PCI Express x8;2 PCI Express x4 slots, 4 memory slots up to 4 gb total DDR2 SDRAM; gigabit ethernet ,one intel PRO 100+ server network connection; 800 & 533 MHz system bus.

Which processor would you recomend for each kind of normal business server?

Does not indiciate what kind of memory to use???

Would you recomend this board for building servers?

What is an enter or entry server motherboard? I had not heard of them before. Description states that it is an ideal entry level board.

Final note; the last site I was on was: www.alexa.com/siteinfo/diy-computer-repair.com. Your site is ranked in the 200,000+ on the www; the majority of your site visitors are from Canada; are women averaging in age of 45-55 years old. Thougth you might like to know this. Google is the main SEO used.

Many thanks again.

Kermit

Hello Kermit,

A lot of questions...

>Which processor would you recommend for each kind of normal business server?

When you look at the 'Minimum Requirements' on the package the oldest processor that Server 2003 will run on is a Pentium III, how ever when I worked for a major company I loaded it on some dual processor Pentium II servers.

Depending on the function of the server will depend on the physical hardware. You wouldn't want to run a Data Base program on a Pentium III but a Pentium 4D or Core 2, how ever if you are setting up a firewall server (like what I use) then a Pentium III will work just fine.

>Does not indicate what kind of memory to use???

Type of memory is what is compatible with the motherboard/processor installed. However quantity is what makes a server fast or slow, 1 Gig and it will be slow if you are running a Domain or a DB, 4 gig will make it as fast as the OS can go, along with some optimization that is.

>Would you recommend this board for building servers?

I do not have any experience with that board, however the spec's are compatible with Windows Server 2003.

>What is an enter or entry server motherboard? I had not heard of them before. Description states that it is an ideal entry level board.

Entry level in computer/Geakease means it is a good place to start if you are experimenting or have a low budget. It will get you going and will serve you well until your needs outgrow the physical limitations of the hardware.

P.S.
When you see RC or R1, R2, or even R3 that means the publisher is releasing beta test versions of their software. Most of the time you can sign up to receive beta versions that will time out in 3 to six months. When you sign up you are obligated to report any bugs you encounter with the software. These are good testing programs but a novice may run in to trouble with them thinking it is either another program or hardware that is causing problems not the beta test software.

Hope this helps...

Monte,
Thank you. Information in your reply was top notch as usual. Hope others looking to build their own servers will find the information useful.

How is a Fire Wall Server used in relation to a business or internet web site. Seems the more I learn the less I know.

Firewalls and Proxy Servers
by: Support

Hello Kermit,

For all businesses a firewall and proxy are the best protection against thieves, the only expecption would be a web server and that is a whole different story.

This page expains the relationship between three things:

Router
Firewall
Proxy

Setup Software / Firewall

Note that this is for a business environment or a home network that the owner does not want to rely on the built in firewall of an Operating System such as Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7.

Hope this helps...

P.S.

I will be posting an article on firewalls/proxy severs on the Fix It Blog in a day or two.

Thank you,

The page on the website referanced in your reply is very good reading and makes a great deal of sence. I have a much better understanding of the workings of a firewall server now and is something that I belive I will build. Think I will use the motherboard and a 2.5g P4 processor that is in my GodDauthers case to build on; will be upgrading her computer to the latest and gratest with a i5 dual core processor in the future.

Also, have just reviewed your Blog and completly read all posted. Your comments in So You want to be a computer tech., setting up SHOP very helpful information above what I am already doing.
