Why is My Computer Freezing Up?

by Dave
(Ogden, UT)

Monte:

The last couple of days when I go to the Quantcast website using either IE 9.0 or FF (not sure of the version) my computer freezes up and I have to do a manual shut down then power back up.

Can't be good for my computer.

This problem of freezing up also happens with some PDFs when I try to print or enter fields on a form.

I don't know if the problem is at Quantcast, Adobe Reader or if it is my computer (Vista). Any suggestions?

Dave

What causes a computer to freeze up?
by: Support

Hello Dave,

The three main reasons a computer will freeze up are:

1) A virus.
2) Low memory, that is not enough physical memory in the computer (and a lot of open programs at the same time)
3) Low video memory (more noticeable in Games and with graphics manipulation programs).

Try this:

With your normal programs open, go to the task bar and right click on the bar, from the menu bring up the Task Manager.

Go to the performance tab, you should see two to five boxes on the top line (this is the cpu information, if you have a single processor then there will be two. One for the CPU Usage, and the other side will be the CPU Usage History, you can have one graph per cpu if you want look under the View to change the number of graph).

Under that is the Page file Usage and the PF Usage history.

Under that are four blocks the one you want to compare with the PF Usage is the Physical Memory (K) (the physical memory is in Kilobytes so you have to do the conversion to MB when you compare)

Say you have 2 GB of physical memory in your computer. the PF Usage is at 700 MB with all your programs open and your PF is 2.1 GB in size the amount of Available should be 1 GB or more physical. If it is less then you need to add more memory to the computer (don't forget to increase the Page File when you add the new memory).

If you have a movie on your hard drive start the movie in your player, make it small enough to watch the Task Manager, if the PF Usage goes over the physical memory or the CPU usage goes above 50-60% then the video card doesn't have enough memory to compensate for the added work load, consider upgrading the memory or buying a video card with more memory.

Look at the CPU Usage, if you have all those programs open and they are idle, that is you are not watching a movie or playing music then it should be at zero with an occasional spike up to 25%. If it is constantly at say 15% or above and you are not doing anything (no virus scans running in the background) then you have a virus.

If you suspect a virus you should clean it in the Safe Mode.

See page 15 of the Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual for comprehensive instructions on how to clean a virus from your computer.

Hope this helps ...
