Virus and Back-Up

by Kate
(Las Vegas, NV USA)

I am purchasing an external hard drive tomorrow. Today I thought I lost everything during 14 hours of crashing, not responding, and locking up. (Did you guess Vista?)

Tonight, my laptop is running smoothly but my sanity has been compromised. I've decided I'm never going through that again.

So here's my question. I am fairly certain that a virus did not cause this but let's suppose one was hiding out. Wouldn't the virus automatically be backed up along with files and folders?

I'm guessing my question seems elementary but I wanted to check.

Thanks for your time, Kate

Remove viruses before backup
by: Support

Hello Kate,

Yes you could back up a viurs.

To keep that from happening you should -

1) Update your Anti virus, trojan, spyware software.
2) Restart the computer in the 'Safe Mode' (You do this by pressing F8 when the computer is just starting - depending on the computer it may take a couple of restarts to get in the Safe Mode, you have to be fast).
3) Once you are in the Safe Mode run your anti programs to clean the hard drives.

See this page for more help on cleaning your computer -

As for the crashing see this page to help you 'fix' Vista (this is for Windows 7 but will work for Vista) -

This backup process is for XP but it will help you Vista -

Let me know if you need any more help...

Problem Solved!
by: Kate... again

Thanks for the quick and helpful response. I waited until I was sure of the issue before commenting back here.

There were no viruses, worms etc. The issue was caused by a corrupt Google toolbar in Firefox.

Uninstalling the bar, and then FF too followed by re-installing FF fixed the issue which I since learned is called hanging. But the good news is that it spurred me into getting a external hard drive capable of hand-free backups.

Thanks again, Kate
