USB ports that aren't seen on the XP desktop

by Marianne
(Perkasie, PA, USA)

I bought a dual core computer with 8 USB ports, I didn't have an operating system put on it because I already had an OEM Windows XP Service Pack 2 that I was going to load on the system when I got it.

Basically what happens is when you plug in a flash drive, nothing pops up on the desktop, but in the sys tray you get the eject icon. When you go to computer/drives, you see the hard drive and the drive. but no flash drive. If you go to control panel/device manager it shows the flash drive.

I have gone back through all Microsoft downloads and reloaded all USB patches. The flash drives are HP, so I checked out downloads for flash drives there, there wasn't any. I've gone through the bios to make sure USB is enabled, it is. At this point I've decided to wipe the XP off the drive and install Windows 7, but then I have to upgrade all my other Microsoft software because it won't play with Windows 7.

Anyway, long story short, I have a problem being able to view the flash drive in any of the 8 USB ports I have.

Thanks for any help you can give.

USB device driver
by: Support

Hello Marianne,

When you bought the computer did it come with a users manual and a hardware cd? If you have the cd then the drivers for the USB controler should be there.

Sometimes the USB controler isn't reconized by the usb controler driver that XP installs.

In the divice manager the OS will see it as a USB Root Hub but not the name such as on my computer:
Intell(R)ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller -2934 and so on.

If the list is not specific to the controler then go to the manufacture's web site and look in the support section, normally they have an area for downloading drivers.

If that doesn't help then try this web site:

http://www.windrivers.com/

This site has drivers listed by manufacture.

Hope this helps...

USB port failure
by: Support

Hello Marianne,

If you have installed the drives and it still doesn't see your device there are a few steps you can do:

Try the device on another computer, if it works then that is eliminated as the problem.

Next when you power up the computer go in to the BIOS setup and check to see if the USB ports are enabled, the USB ports should be on the Advanced page.

The last thing that I can think of is that the USB controller has failed.

Hope this helps...

USB not seen on XP's desktop
by: Anonymous

Yes, I have checked the flash/thumb drive on other machines, both windows and Linux (which is what I use) and it works fine, just not on this one machine.

I've also gone through my bios and made sure that USB legacy and otherwise were enabled. Still unable to see on the desktop.

So, if I have a whole controller hub that is bad, does that mean a whole new motherboard, because I've already done that...switched out the original Asus motherboard for a newer version that still accepted my DDR2 and the processor and still had the same problem...see's it everywhere but on the desktop.

USB Port may have failed
by: Support

Hello Marianne,

With what you have discribed the USB controler may have failed, if so and the motherboard is out of waranty then the two options you have are:

Replace the motherboard

Install an USB add on card to get the USB functionality back.

However the add on card will not give you the abitlty to boot the computer from the USB card, none that I know of have the capability to boot the computer.

I just added on a USB 3 card to my main computer but it will not boot the computer.

See this page for a review:

USB 3 is it for you?

Hope this helps...
