Upgrade to a dual monitor video card

by Ron
(Apple Valley, Mn )

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with the graphics built into the mother board.

Everything is working very well.

I thought that adding dual monitor capability would add a cool factor to my Dell.

So I purchased an ATI graphics card.PCI interface.

When I added to the Dell it was not recognized and even pulled down my monitor which was still plugged into the VGA port on the montherboard.

I then plugged my single monitor into the new board but again no monitor.

When I pull the board out all returns to normal.

What Im looking for is a easy upgrade to dual monitors.

I'm afraid to disbale the on board graphics as the board instructions says that I may have to.

I sent the board back and I'm ready to start over as long as the task is easy enough.

If not I can stay with the single monitor and all will continue to work well.

My operating system is WXP SP3.

Any ideas for a simple upgrade to dual monitors?

Do not be afraid to set up the videocard!
by: Kermit

Sir:
It is my understanding from what I have read that when you install a "Video Card," that allows for the use of dual monitors you need to go into the BIOS find the "Intagrated or Onboard Video Card" and disable it. If my memory servers there is in the HOW-TO Section in Mr. Russel's book Do It Yourself Computer Repair. instructing on how to up grade to dual monitors. Additionaly do not forget to go into your Control Panel in display and set up the screen resolution under Settings after you install the card.

This information can also be found in Windows help.

You may also check the How-To Section on the left sided of DIY-Computer-Repair.com Web page.

To get into the BIOS at start up for XP depending on who makes the BIOS you need to press either F2 or Delet, and there is about a 10 second period in which to have to do so before Windows will start.

One more thing when your internal monitor failed it is due to the limitations of the BIOS; it can only reconize 1 video card not 2 thus the reason for disabling the onboard video card in the bios.

Good luck!
