Ribbon cable missing from Touch Pad on Laptop.
by: Support

Hello George,

If the keyboard works and the touch pad doesn't then the ribbon cable will be a seperate cable, some laptop manufactures use the same cable for both.

You should be able to take the keyboard out with out disassmebling the computer again.

Does the touch pad come out with the keyboard? If so see how long the ribbon cable is and look for a connector on the mother board at that length.

If it isn't connected to the keyboard look at the touch pad, the ribbon cable for it should be connected to the touch pad with out a connector, that is it goes inside the touch pad module.

If it is there then pull it gently towards the back of the computer and find the connector that is the same size, is the connector the same size as the keyboard?

If so did you mix the connectors?

That is did you connect the touch pad cable to the keyboard connector and the keyboard cable to the touch pad connector?

I haven't worked on the Dell Isperion 2200 but have older models and the touch pad was connected to the keyboard and used the keyboard ribbon cable.

That is about all that I can think of with out the repair manual for the laptop.

Dell will not give the repair manual to non-certified techs, and I don't have a certification from Dell.

HTH...

reconnecting the touch pad ribbon cable
by: Nina

I just encountered the same problem on my daughter's Inspiron 2200.
The ribbon cable connects under the small removable circuit board just to the left of the modem. The modem is in the center of the motherboard.
Unlatch the small circuit board and carefully slip it out. Now you should see the slot with a small latch. Lift the latch and slip the ribbon cable in it's slot. Click it in place, then put the small circuit board back in place.
put everything back in place and your touch pad should function properly.
