the dc input jack does not always work

by Terri
(Kirtland, OH, USA)

I have tried several ac adaptors so it is not the adaptor.

In order for the power to work you have to place the adaptor just so, sometimes having to turn it or point it up or down, and then I have to keep it in place by propping or taping the cord so it stays in place, if you knock it, it will go to battery power, and my battery can never get fully charged.

I have an HP dv8130us laptop in 2005. The laptop was knocked off my table by my dog and it landed on the ground.

Laptop Power Suppy connector broken
by: Support

Hello Terri,

I know what your problems is and how to fix it. If you want to fix it yourself you can do so with little cost to yourself or you can have it done at a local computer shop that does low level component repair.

What has happened (happens all the time to laptops) is the connector for the DC power plug from the AC Power Adapter has broken loose from the mounting point inside the laptop.

Some times these are part of the power supply sometimes they are in a plastic case that holds them in place. If you want to open the computer case and repair the connection then my site has articles to help you open the case.

If the connector is part of the power supply then you may have to do some solder work. If the connector is held in place with a plastic case then that may be broken, now super glue may or may not hold it in place, some times I have used a soldering iron to melt the surrounding plastic to repair breaks in laptop cases.

If it is part of the power supply and you don't want to or don't have the expertise to solder the connector back on then maybe you could take it out and have it done, although finding someone that is proficient may be harder than finding a new power supply and installing it.

Here are the articles that will help you crack the case, remove the power supply and a little tutorial on soldering -
