XP Operating System

Hello George,

If you are experiencing an error with your computer and you have not changed any hardware or software your computer either has a hardware failure or is infected with a virus.

Try this to determine which is case -

Start the computer and when you see the manufactures Logo/BIOS screen start pressing F8, this will take you in to the 'Safe Mode' if the system will not go in to safe mode you will have to use your Windows install cd and do a repair.

If it goes in to safe mode, then open the Device manager through the System Manager (see my pages in the How to section for the System Manager). Look at the devices, do you see any that have a yellow caution sign or a red circle with a slash? These two symbols mean that the device is having a problem or have failed. You will either have to replace the failed component or in the case of the yellow caution sigh the driver.

If you don't see any devices with these two symbols then your computer has a bad virus infection. See my page about cleaning your computer in the how to section.

If you can not clean the virus you will have to reinstall the Operating System, I suggest if you can get in to the safe mode you back up your data before you reinstall the OS.

Hope this helps...
