Student needing help, processor question.

by IRIS

A PC repair technician is sometimes called on to assemble a PC from parts, exchange a processor that is faulty, add a second processor to a dual-processor system, or upgrade an existing processor to improve performance.

However, often the question is, should the processor be upgraded?

When to upgrade the processor
by: Support

Hello Iris,

Excellent question!

Two comsiderations for upgrading a processor -

Cost
Performace

If the system has more than one processor the you will need to consider the cost, that is if one processor costs say $100 and there are four processors on the motherboard then the cost is a multiple of four, $400. Will the increase in performance off set the cost?

If the customer needs to have performance for say graphics manipulation or Data Base then the cost could be off set.

But to upgrade a processor just for bragging rights doesn't make much sense.

Case in point - I recently upgraded my laptop processor from a P4 1.8 GHz to a 2.5GHz for $29, now it isn't as fast as a Core 2 Duo Hyperthreading processor but it is $1000 cheaper.

Now I also upgraded my Tower from a Core 2 Duo to a Core 2 Quad, partaly for the expeance and performance, cost was $180, still cheaper than a new computer.

Hope this helps...
