Spilled Milk, Keyboard

by John
(Granite City, IL )

We bought the Black Friday Wal-mart Special e-machine e-528 Laptop ($198) and it worked great until a glass of milk spilled on the keyboard. We turned it over, took out the battery, and left it upside down to dry for a few days. The top rows then had to be pushed real hard to free them up. They now push in super easy, but won't register. We removed the laptop keyboard, plugged in a USB keyboard, and everything works fine, so it's the laptop keyboard. We want to soak the old one, let it dry a few days, then plug it back in. WHAT DO WE SOAK IT IN????? We figure if a new keyboard has to be purchased, so be it....If soaking frees up the registering ability, even better!! The way we see it, we have nothing to loose, except a few days.

Keyboard traces
by: Support

Hello John,

Unfortunately you can not clean a keyboard that has had a foreign liquid spilled in it.

Why?

Because the membrane and the PCB (the board) have small traces made of carbon.

That is there is a small piece of plastic on the key with some carbon that matches holes in the board under the key. When the key is pressed the two carbon traces connect sending the keystroke current to the keyboard controller, then you see it displayed on the screen. (This is very simplified expiation of what happens).

When something gets spilled in the keyboard the carbon traces absorb the liquid, this changes the properties of the carbon traces.

The only time you might recover a keyboard that had something spilled in it would be water, and then it is a toss up if the keyboard will work correctly when it is dried out.

So your choice is:

Try to rinse out the residue with WATER only.

If that fails the keyboard is junk, check the manufactures web site there may be a replacement available at a reasonable price.

If you can't replace the keyboard keep the computer, put the bad keyboard back in but leave the cable disconnected. Use it as a desktop with the external keyboard until you get tired of it or it dies completely.

Hope this helps ...
