Spill on Laptop keyboard

by Patti
(Lamar Mo USA)

My son has a laptop and it is only 6 mths old when he sent it in for warrenty repair they told him that it would need a new keybord and motherboard because it appeared to have like sprite or clear sticky substance on these parts.

It was going to costs more for repairs than the computer is worth. I

Is there any way to clean these parts or order replacement parts reasonably?

Cleaning liquid out of a laptop
by: Support

Hello Patti,

It is possible to clean the foreign material out of the computer.

However the keyboard is a total loss, once a liquid gets inside the keyboard it is destroyed.

As for the motherboard you would have to use something to dissolve the sugar that is in soda (alcohol would do this but it would take quite a bit to insure it was all gone).

The problem for the motherboard in cleaning it lies in the connectors and the ribbon cables. They are very small and therefore are not very strong plastic care has to be taken to get all the substance out of every nook and cranny.

As for replacements the only ones available when a computer model is less than two years old are from the manufacture unless someone has one out of warranty and is selling it on eBay as parts. Say you found one that the video display had been broken by negligence and the owner was selling it for parts. That maybe worth the cost for the motherboard and keyboard.

I am sorry but the repair tech was right, it would be labor intensive to clean the motherboard and there is no guarantee that all the foreign substance is cleaned out.

Your options:
Buy a new computer
Have it fixed by the manufacture
Try to find parts (such as eBay)
Try to clean the motherboard.

If decide to open the laptop and try to clean/replace the motherboard there are instructions starting on page 94 in the Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual.

I would buy a new computer and put the old one up for sale as parts on eBay, you may recoup some of the cost.

Hope this helps ...
