by Goutam
(Jiaganj, West Bengal, India)

Sir, My PC's power supply goes off just after 2-3 seconds after of switching on. I have:

1)Removed all the components including CMOS Battery,me. cleaned the sockets and re-connected them.
2)Checked all the capacitors (not by removing but by checking from over the board. all seems to be OK).
3) Replaced SMPS with serviceable new SMPS.
4)Replaced CMOS Battery.

But the problem remains same. Kindly help
Thank you.

Computer shuts down unexpectedly
by: Suppotr

Hello Goutam,

There are a lot of reasons a power supply shuts down after a few seconds of operation:

1) Heat - is the PS fan operating?
2) Shorted component - A device besides the PS has failed and is causing the power supply to shut down due to over voltage/amperage (safety feature of the PS).

You will need to disconnect all the drives, remove all the memory but one module, remove all add on cards except the video (if it isn't embedded).

Power up the computer, does it shut down immeadatly?

If not then put one item in at a time and power up the computer, I suggest you start with the memory, then add on cards, then connect one drive at a time.

When you go through each item one at a time the failed device will become immidately noticable.

If on the other hand you have removed all the items from the computer and it still shuts down immeaditely then the motherboard has an internal short.

I have a written check list in my Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual starting on page 18.

Hope this helps...
