Router connected to my desktop by cable and signal is weak.

by Tom
(Dayton, OH)

I have a D-Link DIR-615 router connected to my TWC modem in the basement of my home. The wireless signal is great to my laptop on the first floor (4 out of 5 signal strength).

A cable connects the router to my desktop computer in the basement, but I only get a signal strangth of 1 out of 5.

Can you help me boost this? Do I have something connected wrong?

Many thanks for your help.
Tom

Network connection
by: Support

Hello Tom,

You have a cable (ie Cat5) that runs from your desktop to the modem in your basement, correct?

If the cable has been there for a long period of time it may have become damaged.

The only way to find out if the cable is bad is with a special cable tester. (they are expensive).

You can try this:

If the desktop is the only computer connected to the modem by cable (you don't have hub with more computer connected) then you can check the network duplex and speed by going to My Network Places, then right click select Properties from the menu.

Next in the new window right click on your network connection, and select properties from the menu.

In the top of the new window you will see the network adapter, on the right is a button "Configure" click that and new window will open.

At the top are some tabs, click Advanced.

On the left hand side is a white box, you are looking for 'Speed' and 'Duplex'. It could be two seperate lines or one such as Speed & Duplex.

You want the the box on right hand side to have 100 Full, or 100 Full mode, or 100 Full Duplex.

Any other setting will cause the computer and the modem to mis communicate and do what is renegotiate the connection, this is also known as "dropped packets".

If the network card is set for 100 Full Duplex then I would suggest you replace the cable it could be deterorated to a point where it maybe going to ground against some metal.

If you replace the cable and that does not improve your speed you next step would to make a decision:

What is cheaper to replace the cable modem or the network card in the computer?

If you are renting the cable modem then it would be cheaper to have the service company to come out and check the modem (they will have the test equipment, they could test your cable to the computer also).

Last step would be to change out the network card.

You will find more network troubleshooting on page 38 of the Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual

Hope this helps ...
