Re-soldering a failed post on motherboard..

by Mike
(Bothell, Wa, USA)

Intermittent Power failure on laptop motherboard..

After opening and dissassembling my laptop and inspecting under macro-scope I found a failed solder joint on the power plug thats attached to the motherboard...

My question is of the five soldered pins from the component, only one pin failed, Do I have to DESOLDER the whole component (all five pins) or do I Desolder / remove the old solder from that one pin and resolder it..?

Visually it looks a little burnt..

Thank You for any assistance with this matter...

Cold Solder Joint on Power Supply connector
by: Support

Hello Mike,

Sometimes with mass produced products you will get an occasional "Cold Soldedr" joint.

That is either the connection didn't get enough heat or solder to make a good connection.

What happens with these cold solder joints is when electricity flows throught the solder it has higher resistance causing the joint to heat up, and when it gets hot enough the solder will melt, thus opening the point where the electricty flow will stop.

You may want to use some solder wick (you can get it at any electronics store) to suck up the excess solder, once the solder is gone then take a small flat tip screw driver and press the connecting leg down against the pad on the PCB (not too much pressure, you don't want to damage the pad you will need to solder to).

Then reapply the solder to the joint, it should make a better connection and not cause any more problems.

I have seen this a lot in smaller devices such as external hard drives, USB ports, and laptop power supplies.

While you are at it with a clean tip and a small amount of fresh solder touch each of the other connections.

If one spot has a cold solder joint there could be another one or two.

Something else to consider about the Power Supply adapter conneector: It will get a small amount of movement every time you plug the adapter connector in, this movement over time will loosen the solder joints, sometimes to failure of the joints.

You will find more techniques on soldering in my Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual on paee 51.

Hope this helps ...
