Replacing old server with new server and use the same IP address

by Will
(Brenham TX 77833)

I have a old server with Window Server 2003 on it that run the circulations system.

I want to replace it with a new Server running the same operating system Window Server 2003.

Would it be simple as to install the Circulation software on it alone with the same IP address and shut down one and start the new one and rejoin the network. Is this possible and is it not so simple as I am sounding.

My goal is replacing a old server with a new one with the same name ip address.

Replace an existing server
by: Support

Hello Will,

Although this question is beyond the scope of this web site I will give you my opinon.

When you build the server you will have to do a few of things that normally you would not do.

a) Not put the server on your network until it is fully ready to take over the current server's duties.

The reason you don't want to put the server on the network with the same name and IP address is that you will start getting duplicate name and IP address errors, it may even cause your network to go down.

b) Before you down the old server remove it from your Domain if it is in one. This will make it easier to bring the new server in to the Domain.

c) Any shares on the old server need to be duplicated once the new server is up and running.

Does the old server have a data base for the application?

If it does you will need to back it up and use the same software to restore it on the new server.

Hope this helps ...
