Replacing LCD on Sony Vaio laptop

by Christine
(West Palm Beach, FL)

There is a pink and green horizontal flashing line across the bottom of the taskbar of my Sony Vaio VGN-CS215J. I assume that I need to replace the LCD. My question is what else should I replace if the problem is from opening and closing the laptop? Also is this something I (with no experience) can do myself?

Video display, inverter or panel?
by: Support

Hello Christine,

Normally when you get a line vertically or horizontally it usually is a broken crystal or series of crystals.

The flashing line with different colors would indicate that one of two problems are occurring:

The inverter is failing.
The ribbon cable is failing.

The bottom of the video display is where the hinges are so unless something was between the video display and the keyboard side of the case when it was closed or something hit the display close to the bottom edge I would surmise that the inverter and the display are failing at the same time.

Can you do a video display replacement?

You could, it takes time and patience because some of the parts you are working with are small and made of plastic.

Do I recommend you do the replacement?

No, I have done a couple of dozen display replacements but not on a Sony.

It maybe as simple as lifting the keyboard and lower case bezel then opening the display bezel. Removing some screws from the display and disconnecting the ribbon cable as in the T series IBM laptop, then again it could be as bad as a older Toshiba. (It took me almost two days to disassemble and reassemble the Toshiba, bad design).

Check the Sony web site for documentation, some manufactures post pdf's for out of warranty equipment, there maybe a manual there for repair of your computer.

So the bottom line is the display and the inverter are failing and need to be replaced.

If you decide to do it I wish you good luck, come to this section and post here if you have questions about when you are doing the replacement.

If you decide to have it done because it is an expensive item to replace I suggest you get three quotes for the parts and time. (Be sure to get a good time frame from the techs for the actual change out, I would assume 3 hours, four max. Anything more and you could buy a new laptop for the cost of time and parts).

Hope this helps ...
