Printer Not Working

Printer Not Working

I don't know if the printer is considered a hardware problem. But, I have tried troubleshooting just to get it to work. It is an HP and the CD does not work either. I went to HP site to download printer to no avail. Printer does not work. Also I believe computer does not recognize printer.

Any other suggestions other than taking it to a computer repair shop?

Hello Christina,

Try this first -

Power down the computer and printer, disconnect the power cords from both or remove the power cord from the electical socket.

Plug in the printer first, power it up, then do the same for the computer.

Go to start/settings/printers did the printer come back?

If it didn't power every thing down again and disconnect the cable from the printer to the computer, just one end, the computer end. Then power both up again.

When the computer is back to the desktop you can plug the usb cable back in, if you disconnected the cable from the computer plug the cable in to a different port than the origanlly.

Did the New Hardware Wizard come up? If it did then just say yes to all prompts then go to start/settings/printers. Is the printer there? If yes then go to properies and test the printer.

If no then the printer may have failed, if out of waranty check with a local repair shop and see how much it would cost to fix it verses a new one.

One other test you could do is if you have another usb device plug it in the port that the printer was connected with, does the computer reconize it?

If not then your port not the priter that has failed.

That is a different problem.

Thank you guys for posting directions for fixing my printer! It did not work so I think it may be more going with my computer then just the printer.

I will taking it to a repair shop. But your comments I will keep cause I would have never taken those steps. I am sure they will come in handy.
