Power-on button not working

by Jeff
(Petersburg, VA)

I have an emachines T2742, running WinXP/SP3; the power-on button does not work. Is this a replacable part? I have done the following: check power cord, wall outlet, voltage setting, performed power reset.

Power button
by: Support

Hello Jeff,

Gateway bought up the emachine product line in 2006.

If the computer is out of waranty then you have noting to loose by either having the power button replaced or replacing it yourself.

However it may not be the physical power button but the motherboard.

The motherboard controls the power through a chip.

Try this:

Open the case.
On the motherboard there is a small battery called the 'BIOS Backup' that keeps the CMOS chip powered when electrical power is removed from the power supply.

It is about the size of a quarter, remove it. Then remove the power cord for 3 to 5 minutes.

Put the battery back in, close the case, plug in the power cord.

Check to see if the power on button works. If it does you are done.

If it doesn't then either the physical power on button has failed or the motherboard is failing.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the help! It did not make any difference. I'm moving on to power supply & motherboard.
