Computer restarts -Heat?
by: Support

Hello Tom,

There are numerous reasons a computer will restart with out warrnig -

Virus

Change in hardware (new hardware not configured correctly or hardware that has failed)

Heat - (a build up of dirt inside the computer on components that causes the computer to restart/shutdown to protect itself).

So how do you go about troubleshooting a problem like this?

First are you getting a prompt at Boot up that something is wrong with the system, normally you will get a message that x has failed press F1 to continue or xx keypress to go to the BIOS setup?

If so then check what the failure is repair or repalce the failed part.

If not I suggest you look at cleaning your computer inside. (See the ling at the bottom of the post for how to clean your computer).

Then look at the temature at the base of the comptuer, if it is on a desk does it get unrestricted fresh air? If it is a tower and on the floor is it under the desk? Anything blocking the flow of fresh air. And lastly room tempature over all, it is getting close to summer time, how warm is it in the room where the comptuer is?

Check the BIOS and see if there is a hardware monitor, if it does what tempature is the Motherboard and Processor running at? 120* F or 30* C or below are well with in tolarance, higher means you need to add something to cool the interior of the computer.

If you clean the computer and there is suffecent air getting to the computer for it to run cool enough and the tempature is with in the above guide lines and it still restarts randomly then next I would suspect a virus.

See this page Cleaning a computer for cleaning the dust/dirt and viruses from your computer.

If you do all the above and it still restarts randomly then you have a hardware driver that is corrupt.

To find the corrupt hardware driver you can use the safe mode and check the Event Viewer for failed services, normally the driver will write an event when it fails.

Hope this helps...
