PC just lights up but nothing happens.

by Alex
(England)

Hi. My PC was left on most of the time. When I went to turn it on the other day I could see the processor fan and Video card fan running but it does not seem to boot up?? Nothing appears on the screen but all three LEDS on the keyboard light up. I know the screen is good as I have tried it on another PC. I have tried a different hard drive but this made no difference. The one thing that I can say is that it just doesn't sound right, normally you can hear the processor working and hard drive spinning but it seems to be stuck at a very early stage of the start up process.

Computer powers up but doesn't start
by: Support

Hello Alex,

You say that the computer goes past the POST (Power On Self Test) but hangs after that. (I know it went through the post because the last step of the tests is to check the keyboard, you say you see the key board key indcator leds flash.)

If you haven't changed any hardware then you need to narrow down the problem.

Try this -

1st) Disconnect the power cable from the computer for a few minutes.

2nd) You need to know the keypress to get in to the BIOS, once you know the keypress to get in to the BIOS plug the power cord back in and power up the computer. Did the system start? If so go in to the BIOS, go to the Power section and check the settings for Standby or Hibernate. If these settings are active you can either set the time out longer that is from say 15 minutes to 1 hour or deactivate them. If they are set for deactivated then save your settings and exit, the system will restart.

If it starts then you are done, problem solved.

If it doesn't start then I would say you have a hardware failure.

Hope this helps...
