Override passwords & and register the computers to myself

by John
(Oak Harbor, Wa)

I purchased a lien sale storage unit and the only thing worth a darn in it was 3 computers, 2 laptops & 1 pc, they are all password protected and I am unable to access most anything or the internet do to the password protection & parental controls, there are no disks or user manuals either, is there a way to remove password protection & any of the previous owners info so the computers can be used. and if so if I put my personnal info on them will anyone be able to steal my info from these used computers?

Password removal
by: Support

Hello John,

You have some options on removing or reseting the password for the Administrator.

1) Try logging on as the Administrator and don't use a password. Some people never set it.

These options require a bootable cd (or pen drive it the computer is new enough to support booting from a usb device)

2) You could use BartPE or ERD Commander and a program called Locksmith to change the passwords.

See these pages for information about ERD Commander and BartPE -

Build a BartPE disk

3) Using BartPE or ERD Commander go to the C:\Windows\System32 directory and delete the file called SAM (there isn't any exention on this file) the go to the C:\Windows\Repair directroy and COPY the file named SAM to the C:\Windows\System32 directory.

Restart and log on as the Administrator don't use a password. From there you can delete all the old user's profiles by using the Properties of My Computer on the Advanced Tab.

Beaware that when you delete a profile the home directory of the profile is also deleted. So if there is any information there you need to keep back it up first.

4) Your last option is to reinstall the Operating System on all the computers. This may be a better choice becaus then you would start with a clean system and none of the left over problems from the previous owner.

Hope this helps...
