OS boot problem

by Johnathan
(Spain)

Okay I have an old IBM Thinkpad I want the missus to use which origionally came with Windows 98 (Yes I know very old). Every time I try to boot it up to use it comes up with "/windows/system32/config/system" is missing or corrupt, repair file with origional CD-ROM. I dont have the origional disc. What I want to do is upgrade it to either Windows XP or Vista both of which I have the origional OS discs for. I have tried going into the Boot options to try and boot it from a seperate CDrom drive but this is not working. Please help.

IBM Boot - BIOS
by: Support

Hello Johnathan,

You need to do a few things to get the CD to boot:

Power down then power up, press the F1 key when the screen lights up.

This will go to the BIOS setup. On the main screen you will see a menu, using the up/down arrows go to 'Startup'.

The next screen will have 'Boot' and 'Network'. Select 'Boot'

In the list highlight the 'CD-ROM Drive' use the '+' or '-' keys to move it to the top, the second entry can be either '+Removable Devices' or 'Hard Drive'. If you have a floppy that shares the bay with the CD-ROM or a external floppy in a case you may want the Removable Devices as your second choice.

When you have your selections the way you want then press F10 to save your work and do a restart.

With the CD in the drive you should see the "Press any key to boot from CD....." if you don't power the computer down and then back up.

When the screen flashes press the F12 key, this will give you a list of boot devices in the computer, select the CD-ROM Drive as the boot device and you should see the "Press any key to boot from CD....."

Now if you don't see the "Press any key to boot from CD....." after setting the BIOS and pressing the F12 key your cd or drive has failed.

Hope this helps...
