only starts in safe mode

by Teresa

My computer will only work in safe mode. When I try to start in windows normally I can get past the welcome screen and then the screen goes to my desktop pic. I don't have any icons or taskbar. I tried to get my pics and music off the computer but neither of my cd drives will work. I am told to insert a disk into that drive. I do not want to lose any pics or music. I have windows XP Professional, manufacturer is ESC, model 7KS5A. I tried to do a system restore from the safe mode and it didn't really work. Except for putting back the few programs that I had deleted. My daughter did download limewire and some problems started then and the biggest problems was during an update for windows that was recommended. The computer froze during the installation. So it was never finished. Can you help???

Virus
by: Support

It sounds like your daughter downloaded a virus when she downloaded limeware.

Try this -

In the 'Safe Mode' run anti-virus, anti-trojan, and anti-spyware programs to clean it, then UNISTALL the limeware program.

Here are two articles to help you -

Information about Virus

Cleaning a computer

After cleaning the system if you still can't get to your desktop go back in to Safe Mode and create a new user id and log on with that.

If the desktop is fine then you will have to delete your old user id profile, you can do that by right clicking on My Computer, select Properties, go to 'Advanced' then to the 'User Profies' block, click on 'Settings' then find your profile and delete it.

A word of caution - If you delete the profile you will loose all the documents in My Documents, so you should move 'My Documents' from your old user id before deleteing the profile. It is under 'Documents and Settings' then your old user id.

Hope this helps...
