Old Mini Tower Rebuild; Cable Connections To Mimi (7inchx7inch) Motherboard Phase 2
by Kermit
(El Paso, Texas, USA)
Hello,
Progress!!!!
Today was a great and furstrating day for me received the new power supply and the mother board. Yesterday I stripped the tower down to the old CD rom and floppy disk. Installed the 2 new 80mm fans got them at the Raido Shack store down the street Thermotakes with blue LED's.Not bad for $9.99 each also got a momentary contact switch (the new power switch) and after an hour of drilling out the front pannel and triming plastic I finally got the thing sodder to the wires that go to the mother board. Had to fabracate a new back pannel for the expantion slots as the orignal motherboard had every thing in opposition to the new motherboard. While I was at it I drilled a bunch of holes for the new exaust fan. Decided to improve the air flow from the front of the tower the vents in the front at the botton were 1/16 inch holes so took a 1/8 inch drill and enlarged them (front pannel is plastic); then added some more holes behind the fan. At some point in time something heavy fell on the tower and cracked the front pannel on the left side; missing a chunk, When I had the soddering iron out and hot I used it to weld the plastic back together; nice and strong again. Makes this 11 year old tower a bit battle scared and kind of funky, with with the blue light shining out the vent holes front and back with the big red power switch.
The Ultra 350 watt power supply didn't match up with the orignal mounting holes and to center it in the case I had to cut and fold back out of the way about a 1/2 inch of the left side of the back of the case. Made a template of paper for the holes to drill in the tower.. Man that bottom mounted 140mm fan in the power supply is huge. Cut out the a portion of th newly fabracated rear pannel for all the external ports wanted to make sure that nothing touched the motherboard that took a lot of measuring.
Now have the motherboard intalled as is the new power supply. Had to change some of the conectors and wires to match the mother board post for the power switch as the orignal was as 3 wire conector and the new motherboard required a 2 (space limitions). Small matter. (Welder/Fabracator by trade. Back yard electriction)
The difficult I do daily the impossible takes a little longer. My motto.
Will be getting the hard drive tomorrow at the local Tigers Direct CompUSA, and the operating system.
This has been quite a project and learning experance for a 55 year old man. Proof that a person who bought their first computer 3 years a go this month, with the help of Do-it-yourself computer-repair... can learn to rebuild an old tower, on the inside, bigger, stronge, better. Like the 8 million dollar man. We will let the younger generation figure that one out.
Have enjoyed sharing the experance with you and your readers. Will report again in a couple of days as to the success or failures in this rebuild (That 7 inch x 7 inch motherboard sure is small.
Much in thanks.
Kermit
