NetBook

by edog

I bought a Hp netbook with windows xp and I was wondering I have a xp cd can I use that on my netbook? The netbook gots wireless and wire connects. I want to bring it back to factory seting. The reason is I have a couple corruted drivers on my network adaptor an some other problems. When I bought the netbook I never got a cd with it but I do have a cd laying around. Plus the backup restore got erased. Unless theres a button I can try before it loads up like F6 or something.

Uisng a different CD to install XP
by: Support

Hello Edog,

Before trying your cd contact HP and see if you can get the XP cd for your netbook, it will have all the latest drivers for that make/model.

Have you tried to find the network and other drivers on the internet and reinstall them?

Other wise:

This is the take I have on Windows Operating System product keys:

If the product key on the box/cd/computer is compatable with your install cd then you can use that install cd.

The license is registered to the product key not the install cd.

Now the problem is the product key is generated by Microsoft for a batch of CD's.

That is the installation on your computer is proabaly SP 3 with almost all the updates through three to six months before you bought it. (Depending on how long it was stored at the place where you bought it).

Before reinstalling the OS I would try using the repair feature of the cd first.

With the cd in the drive start the computer, at startup watch the screens, it will show the options:
New installation
Repiar installation

Select the repair, you have to have the password for the Administrators account, if you don't know it before you do anything use the User's applet in the control panel to change the password on the Administrator to something you do know.

If you can not repair the OS then you can try your old cd, the only way you will know for sure if the product key will work with your cd you will have to install the OS to the point of entering the cd key.

Hope this helps...
