My USB's don't work

by Brian
(Georgia)

If I plug a device into any of my usb sockets it is not read by the computer. The usb's are receiving power because some devices light up (music player) but no data is transmitted. My mouse is not read, printer.

USB Devices
by: Support

My first impression is that the usb chip set has failed, if this is true you can purchase a card that you insert in the computer to take the place of the embedded usb support chips.

To find out if the chip set has truly failed you can try this test -

First find out what the keypress is for you to get to the BIOS setup screens.

Then power the computer down, disconnect all your USB devices.

Power up the computer and go in to the BIOS setup, the USB port configuration may be under the Advanced menu or Port menu depending on the BIOS.

Find the USB Configuration, is it enabled or disabled?

If it is disabled then enable it (problem solved) if it is enabled then disable it and then save your settings, restart but before the the Operating System starts power the computer down. Disconnect the power cord for a few minutes. (This is to insure all power to all components dissipates).

Plug the power cord back in and one usb device, say the mouse, power up the computer and go back in to the BIOS, go to the USB setup and enable the ports.

Restart and see if the Operating System sees the mouse.

If the OS sees the mouse then you have cleared the problem, if not then the USB Chip set has failed.

Your choice from here is either replace the motherboard or install an add on card to take the place of the failed USB chip set.

Hope this helps...
