My power supply quit

by John
(Ottawa Ontario Canada)

Everything was unplugged. I was connecting a second hard drive. The only thing I noticed was that I was having difficulty getting the power source connected to the second hard drive but it did connect with persistence. Next I connected the ribbon connectors that were already connected to the dvd rom, without difficulty. The other hard drive was connected independently. When I reconnected the power source it no longer worked. I unplugged the second hard drive however it still does not power up.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Power Supply Failure
by: Support

Hi John,

What I suspect is that when you connected the power to the new drive you either connected it backwards, that is the connector was reversed, the 12+ and 5+ went to ground.

There may be hope for the power supply but the hard drive may be dead.

Try this disconnect all the power cables to everything in the computer, plug in the AC cable to the power supply, leave it in for a minute or so then disconnect the power supply cable. Reconnect only the connector to the motherboard, on the motherboard there are usually one or two leds that will light up when the power cord is plugged in. Try it, do you see the led's?

If not then the power supply is dead, there may be more problems than that due to the high voltage that went from the connector miss alignment.

If you get the led's then connect up the old hard drive, cd/DVD drive, and if you have one the floppy drive power cables.

Power the system up? Does it power up?
Yes - Done

No - Power supply is dead.

Thre used to be a fuse or circit breaker in the power supplies but because they are made in countries where these nicitys are not economical so when some thing overloads the power supply it burns up components instead of the fuse or popping the Circuit breaker...

Hope your power supply is ok!
