My New PC

by George Mathew
(Dubai, United Arab Emirates.)

I built a PC with Q 9550 Intel processor on Gigabyte mother board EP43-DS3. I have 4 gig memory. But the system shows only 3 gig memory and also, the system hangs after opening some files. Then i have to restart it. I gave to a geek and the situation is same.

Kindly help me. I thought being a very high performing processor and mother board I would get first class computer. Of course I have 2 PCIe video cards one on 16x and one on 1x.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards
George Mathew

Slow PC
by: Support

Hello George,

Yes, I have 4 Gig of memory in my computer also and I can see it count up when I start it. But when I look at the Properties page of My Computer I see 3 Gig of memory.

Why? Because 32 bit Opreating Systems the maximum ram is 3 Gig. If you want to access all of your Ram the 4 Gig you will need a 64 Bit Operating System such as XP 64 Bit Pro or Vista 64 Bit Ultimate.

Why is your computer slow when you open programs, hangs and has to be restarted and it is new?

There are a lot of different reasons for a slow compute even a brand new one.

A) Bad Operating System install, something was not installed correctly when the Installaton progam ran.

B) Your hard drive is over 250 gig and it only has one partition, even Vista has problems with very large hard drives.

C) Your computer may have a physical problem with at device and either the wrong driver is installed or the device is failing but the Operating System doesn't report it to you.

What to do about this?

1) You need to get in to the Event Viewer and look for errors, right click on My Computer, go to Manage. Then open up the Events, go to the System Events.

2) If you don't have any Events that are hardware or software errors, then I would move on to Optimizing my computer.

3) How big is the hard drive? Is it all one Partition or Volume? You may want to reinstall the OS and when you do spit the hard drive up. Normally when I setup a new computer I take 15-60 Gig for the System volume, then depending on how big the drive is use the rest as one or two other volumes (I have three in my main computer, C: is 64 Gig, D: is 190 gig, E: is 250 gig.

All though you are running Vista the Troubleshooting and How To.. sections of this web site will help you resolve your slow computer problems.

Hope this helps...
