LED on motherboard
by: Support

Hello Charles,

The LED on the motherboard is an indicaton of power that is present on the motherboard.

Different colors have different meanings.

Depending on the motherboard manufacture the color will indicate:

Green - +5,-5, +12, and -12 volts pressent with the appropaite amperage to run the motherboard.

Red - Normally means that there is insuffecent amperage to run the motherboard.

Amber means that there is insuffecet voltage in one of the four listed above.

This could be an indication that the power supply is failing or the motherboard has failed.

Check the manufactures web site to find out what the different LED colors mean, it may be the power supply has failed or it may mean the motherboard has failed.

Try this before replacing any parts:

Disconnect the power cord from the comptuer and the electrical socket. Reconnect, did the LED go green or stay RED?

If it is still red then disconnect the power cord again and do the following:

Disconnect all power cables from all connectors, you don't have to worry about where they go, each type of connector is different so a hard or CD/DVD drive connector will not connect to the Floppy drive nor will it connect to the motherboard.

Once you have disconnected all the connectors reconnect the motherboard power connectors, one will be either 24 or 28 pins, there may be one or two smaill four pin connectors on the motherboard also.

You need to disconnect and reconnect the power cord after each step below:

Once you have reconnected all the connectors did the LED go green?

If still red check manufactures web site for recommendations, is it the motherboard or power supply?

Next steps if green:

If it does then connect all the other connecors one at a time, check the motherboard LED after each one.

If one connector causes the LED to go RED again then that device has failed.

If the LED stays green then it was a loose connector.

If the LED stays RED after the power cable reconntions then either the motherboard has failed or the power supply has failed.

Hope this helps ...
