My motherboard or Processor is not working...

by Yaphaba
(India)

My computer is not functioning. I check the monitor,RAM,Keyboard,Mouse and this things are working fine on another computer. I am fear my motherboard or Processor is not working. When i power up the system I can't hear any beep sound the motherboard indicator is lightning and the processor fan is spinning. I power off the computer and touch the processor heat sink and the head sink is hot to touch. How can I find out if it is my Motherboard or Processor is not functioning.

Is the Processor or the Motherboard that is dead?
by: Support

Hello Yaphaba,

If all the components connected to and mounted on the motherbaord are in good working condition then you are correct in suspecting the Processor or the Motherboard.

Lack of beeps would lead me to believe that the processor is the dead part over the motherboard.

Normallly when the motherboard goes out the power on led will not come on, nor will the fan on the processor heat sink spin up.

The processor heat sink will in fact get hot under normal operations if it is the OEM heat sink that came with the processor.

Look at the motherboard and see if you see any signs of overheating or burnt marks/traces and inspect the capacitors power capactitors (if you have them) for one that is blown.

Processors are not that expensive so you may get away with doing an upgrading to a faster processor. If you go with a processor I would suggest a bigger heat sink and fan.

Hope this helps...
