My motherboard is not responding

by anthony
(buford, ga, usa)

I belive my cpu has been hit by lighting I have a asus M3A motherboard I turn on my cpu and it does not come on.

I have broke down my cpu and looked for burn spots or anything noticeable with no luck.

I have checked for power to the board and my green led lights up (on board) but it seems I have no outlet power to the fans,cd-rom,v-card ext.

So I am thinking it might be something is just shorted out I am sure with a little info I might be able to repair it.

Power supply failed
by: Support

Hi Anthony,

If you had a lighting strike and none of the drives or fans spin up then the odds are that:

1) The power supply is failing

2) There is a short in the motherboard or one of the components.

What you can try if you have another computer is to take a hard drive or DVD drive out of the damaged computer and test it with the good computer. (You could test all the other drives/fans in this way also).

This will tell you if the lightning strike went through the power supply to the internal components.

If it is good then the power supply took all the surge, replacing the power supply may bring the computer back to life.

If the drive is dead then all the components in the computer were damaged.

In my experance 99% of lighting strikes will cause extensive damage to all the components, it is rare that just one component is damaged.

Hope this helps ...
