My computer will not turn on.....

by Bill
(Canton, Ohio)

When I tried to turn on computer, nothing happened.

I checked the power cord and it is functioning. I tried turning the power switch on and off and on on the back of the computer, still no electricity getting through.

I assume the switch suddenly went bad, but don't know for sure. Our electricity was out for 3 days last week due to ice storm, when it was restored and I tried to turn on my desktop, it wouldn't turn on.

It was not on when the electricity to the house went off, and I do have it plugged into a surge protector.

The monitor, cable modem, printer, and router are all plugged into the surge protector also and they are all working.

My computer was built in 2003 and has an ASUS P4PE motherboard according to the user guides that came with the computer.

I hope I've given you enough info. that you can give me some direction on fixing this, and thank you very much for your help.

Computer will not power up.
by: Support

Hello Bill,

When the power went off did you loose heat also?

If you did, did it get very cold where the computer is located?

Here are a few possibilities.

When the computer cooled off more than normal these things can happen:

A) An add on card, memory, or the processor has worked it's way out of the socket when the socket (which is plastic) cooled down before the metal 'fingers' of the device did.

B) A part in the computer has what is known as a 'cold solder' joint.

What you can try:

With the power cord disconnected open the computer case.

Lift out each add on card then replace it.
Lift out the memory one by one and then replace it.
Disconnect each cable one by one and reconnect them.

The reason for doing each item one at a time is so you don't mix up where the item came from.

Once you have 'reseated' the cards, memory, and cables put the case cover back on and power it up.

If it comes up then then it was one of the items going to ground by being dislogded in it's slot.

If it doesn't power up then you may have a cold solder joint. (When a solder joint has had a lot of heat for a long time it expands, then when the joint cools off it contracts, it may not be bad enough to keep the computer from starting under normal condiditions but when the joint gets very cold it could contract enough that the electrons can't flow - this is called a microfracture, it kills a lot of servers that were never powered down for a long time [years!]).

A cold solder joint will take more time because you will need to disconnect or remove all unneeded devices and then power the computer up, if it comes up then power it down and replace one device at a time, powering it up after each device is connected to find the one that has failed.

Hope this helps ...
