my computer will not boot and it has a display message!

by Jay
(Sun City, Calif. 92586 USA)

It started by freezing when it was running. I could not get it to respond to shut off so I had to cut the power.

When I re-powered to boot up, I knew I had a problem I never encountered before.

The system is not going through the normal boot process and I cannot get into the bios.

When powered up to start, I get the following text message on screen:
Intel (R) 915GV/910GL PCI Accelerated SVGA Bios
Build Number: 3402 PC DEV 08/23/2004 13:03:07
Decompilation or Dissasembly Prohibhited
Copy Right (C) 2000-2003 Intel Corp All _ (the underscore is flashing)

Thats it. I have bought another replacement Motherboard and get the same message.

I took the Ram modules out and then it beeps. I took the hard drive out and placed it in an external usb box and it reads from my other computer.

(I was ablwe to copy my contents out, it seems the hard drive is working fine).

I also disconnected the hard drive and powered up the motherboard. I get that same message.

I am at a complete loss, hopefully you can help!

Thanks in advance,
Jay

System will not boot
by: Support

Hello Jay,

If it beeps count the short and logn beeps and the go to the Intel web site, support section then do a search for "beep codes" I don't have a list of them because each motherboard manufacture uses differnt codes.

From what you are saying is if you take the ram out it will beep, but if the ram is in the it doesn't beep?

Try this, on the motherboard there is the BIOS backup battery (it is about the size of a quarter) in a socket, take it out, disconnect the power cord from the computer. Leave it disconnected for five minutes or so.

Power up the computer, can you get in to the BIOS?

If you can then the problem was resovled by clearing the BIOS.

If not then read on.

Do you have another video card?

Try the other video card, did it come up?

Yes, fixed.

No, read on.

I think it is either the video card or the processor, it may be getting too hot or it is diying. (If it is diying that will be the first I have heard of)

Are you overclocking the memory and/or processor?

If the processor is getting too hot when you power up the computer a quick check you can do is use a can of air, shake it up for a minute or so, use the air on the processor until liquid comes out and frost forms on the heat sink/processor. (the liquid is the air propellent and is not toxic).

Power it up, did it come up or beep?

You say you have a new motherboard and it is doing the same thing?

If so then one of the devices (video, memory, processor) that you moved off of the old motherboard is the culprit. Finding it is the task...

You will find more troubleshootig guides in my book Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual starting on page 30.

Hope this helps...
