My computer stopped running and won't start up

by Stephen
(Richmond, Va)

Stephen

My computer has a duo core E8400 intel processor with an nvidia 9800GT graphics card. Yesterday it shut off while I was using it. I attempted to restart it but it won't restart. after shutting off the powerr supply and turning it back on I tried to restart it again. All that happened was the lights blinked and the fans jerked slightly, but it shut down and won't restart. Since it seemed to be a power problem I thought it was the power supply. I went out and purchased a new one and installed it last night. Much to my disssapoitment, the same thing happened. Now I'm lost. Could it be that the motherboard has died? How can I diagnose the problem.?

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Steve

Computer Start Failure
by: Support

Hi Stephen,

You have done the obvious by replacing the power supply.

So now you need to think about the things that are not obivius.

In my Troubleshooting section of this web site I walk you through those steps.

Basicly here are the steps:
Remove all power from the drives.
Remove any add on cards except the video.

This procedure is time comsuming and should be done one step at a time -

With the case open power up the computer, watch the fans, did it start? If the fans spin up but the computer did not strat then remove power.

Reseat the memory, power up the computer, did it start? No go to next step, yes then reconnect all the items you disconnected and restart, did it restart? No go to the next step, yes then power it down and put in one add on card at a time, restart after each one until all add on cards are installed. Did it restart after each add on card was installed, yes done. No the last card installed is the problem.

If the memory reseat did not make any differacnce remove the memory and power up the computer, does it beep? If so note the beeps, there will be either short or long or one contious beep. If it beeps then go to the manufactures web site and get the beep code for the error you are experanceing.

If you removed the memory and the computer did not beep then either the processor or the motherboard has failed.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for your help. I ran through the exercise of adding one thing at a time to the power supply ubtil I found out what failed.

It turned out the graphics card had failed. I replaced the card and everything is fine. Thanks again for your help.

You have a great web site.
