My computer shuts down without warning

by Angie
(Charlotte, MI USA)

I have a Toshiba laptop and recently had a new hard drive put in it and even more recently had a new DC jack solided to the board and also had to buy a new AC power pack adapter.

After the DC jack/new adapter was bought and completed, I turned my computer on and the first time it ran for about 5 -6 hours then just shut down. I tried to turn it back on, it came back on but within 5 minutes shut down again.

I turned it on the next morning and ran it about an hour and it was ok. I turned it on again that night and ran it, searched, etc for about 4 hours and it was fine.

Then later than night it did it again - crashed. Now, I can't have it on or searching for more than about 15-30 minutes without it just completely shutting down.

I am hoping it is not the motherboard. I hear the fans come on as well.

Also, I had a friend of mine do the computer work and he mentioned something about the glue (?) that was holding one of the fans.

Could something with the fan cause this?

I hear it running and it isn't on long before it shuts down.

How do I know if the motherboard is going?

I use this laptop for work and am havig to use my archaic desktop which is very old and slow and need my laptop back!

And no, work won't pay for it.

Thanks!!!

Unexpected shut down of computer
by: Support

Hello Angie,

Now this one is hard to pin down.

When a computer shut down unexpectedly then there is either a hardware problem, the computer is over heating, or has a virus.

You have done some maintenance on the computer so I would suggest you start there.

Because the shut down varies in the amount of time it takes to happen it suggest to me a cold solder point, either where the DC adapter port was worked on or the power supply in the computer.

You had the work done by a friend so you may want to ask him to check the joints where he worked on the DC port adapter and the surrounding area.

Does the computer run ok on battery?

To check the computer for heat shut down you will need a can of compressed air, when the computer is running blow a second or so of compressed air in to the intake side of the fan (the fan will blow hot air out of one set of louvers, there will be another set of lovers where fresh air is drawn in this will be the intake). Do this every ten - fifteen minutes. See how long you can keep the computer running. If it still shuts down then go with the cold solder joint and have it looked at.

If the computer will not start at all I would suggest you have the power supply looked at. Also have the fan and the adjacent area checked for loose or missing parts.

I doubt if you have a virus but you could check that by going in to the Safe Mode and running your AV program to make sure.

Hope this helps...
