My Battery won't charge

by James
(Melbourne,Fl. USA)

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 & my battery stopped charging.

When I hook up the AC adapter,a message comes up saying that it cannot recognize my adapter & my performance will be slowed.

I took it over to a computer shop & he checked out my adapter & tried other ones, but it still will not charge.

He said that it is the motherboard going up.

What do you think & if it's not, what can i do to repair it.

Thanks

Battery, AC Adapter, or Power Supply failing?
by: Support

Hello James,

When the battery will not charge and the computer will start on AC that narrows it down to two of the three components -

The Battery

The Power Supply

Why exclude the AC Adapter? Because the computer will start.

Try this -

Remove the battery, power up the computer? Do you have any problems with the computer?

Does it run ok for say an hour, touch the AC Adapter is it warm or HOT?

If it is hot then it is going bad, if it is warm then it is ok.

Touch the underside of the computer in the back or if the battery is in the back then in the cavity where the battery goes. Is it hot or warm?

If it is hot then the power supply is having problmes.

I would suggest a new battery before chaning out the power supply. For a newer (under three years old) the battery should last almost two years with normal use. In the last two or three months did the battery time start to degrade? That is did it start going dead sooner than it did say six months ago?

If you buy a new battery (Of good quality) and it still doesn't charge then the Power Supply charging circut has failed (this happens) and the complete power supply needs to be changed.

I don't think the motherboard is going bad, so I would suggest if you don't change the Power Supply yourself you take it to someone besides the tech that saw it last.

Hope this helps...
