Multiboot - Lan, internal hard drive, external hard drive

by John
(Southport, Ct, USA)

I want to take a cat cable and use the LAN option in the bios as a boot option with a different operating system than is on my laptop.

I have a Toshiba Satelite A135-S4656 which came with Vista basic and now has XP Pro.

The external hard drive boot I wouild like to put Vista on it. is this possible and if so how do I do it?
John

Multi Boot a computer
by: Support

Hello John,

To boot a computer from across a Lan you need to have two servers, one is a DHCP and DNS server that has the Boot file and three other services enabled, then you need to create the Boot File, this can only be 640K in size, normally this would be in what is called an EEPROM. This would be a DOS boot not XP,Vista, or even Win 95 or 98.

To boot from your external drive the computer BIOS has to have the capablity to boot a Firewire or USB device, see this page to make your hard drive in to a bootable device:

Making an External Hard drive bootable

Hope this helps...
