Motherboard change

by Mattehw
(Richmond, VA)

I wish to swap out my current motherboard (an Asus IPIBL Burbank (HP)) with a Gigabyte P45T ES3.

I have a VISTA Home Premium OS (Service Pack 2). I have everything on one hard drive. I've read your article on swapping mbs.

Do the same instructions apply to VISTA?

Do I need to uninstall any drivers on the old system before I switch to a Gigabyte MB? Of note: the HP Vista was preinstalled. I have no OS disk.

Thank in advance

Matt

Motherboard upgrade
by: Support

Hello Matt,

Before doing anything have you:

Backed up your data?
Made an image of the Operating System drive?

If you don't have the OS install disk there is a chance that when you use an old install for a new motherboard that the OS will BSOD.

Sorry there are to many variables.

If you uninstall all the drivers (use Safe Mode or the OS will do a search and find them again) then power the computer down with out doing a 'search for new hardware' there is a good chance it may not BSOD.

It all depends on the memory/CPU chip set, Gigabyte uses Intel and so does ASUS but are the chip sets close enough to get by with generic drivers?

If you make an image of the OS partition and it BSOD's on you then you could put the old motherboard back in until you can get either a Vista install disk or upgrade to Windows 7.

For more on Motherboard upgrades see page 78 of my Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual

I had an Intel motherbaord in my server and it had so many problems with a Windows Server OS that I decided to get a Gigabyte motherboard (both motherboars are reviewed in the Hardware Reviews section). When I put the Gigabyte motherboard in the comptuer I left the old version of the Server OS on the hard drive and it runs just fine, one of the few times I tried it and it worked.

Hope this helps ...

Motherboard change to be or not to be "Q'
by: Joe Giffney

Hi Monte & Matthew Personally in this situation I would take the easy and garanteed successful way out, by upgrading to Windows 7 premium. As Monte points out there are to many variables to consider. Also why continue with a defunked O/S or back track to Win XP (which you can still purchase on the Net for around $35.00). As you are obviously trying to advance and update your hardware why not take this oportunity to advance your computer skills also. I don't think you will have any problems getting up to speed with Windows 7 as you have been using Vistsxxx sorry these glasses Vista. Remember there are now no updates for Vista and you are obviously using the internet (Security Issues), so again my advise for what it is worth is to take the easy way out. Backup your Data, format your drive and install Windows 7 now ,don't wait for Windows 8 as that looks like you will have to update most of your hardware also to justify the upgrade.
Regards Joe: sorry to put such a downer on your upgrade but I thing you will be glad in the end.
