Motherboard and Processor Replacement

by Gus DeGuilio
(Lemont, Illinois, USA)

I have a older mid tower Pentium III that I want to upgrade the motherboard and processor. The exisitng board is a ABIT 6A69RA1H Model and the system board is a ABIT i851E-83627HF Rev:0.1

The tower has two 6 month old hard drives totaling 250 GB, a new DVD CD read write Burner and a new 450 Watt power supply.

My question is what mother board will fit in this mid tower case and what would be the best replacement? I would prefer to stay with Intel gear.

Computer Case and motherboard upgrade
by: Support

Hi Gus,

It isn't the motherboard that is in the computer case that determins the new motherboard it is the computer case and how much you want to pay for the upgrade.

Look at the back of the case, a newer case will have a template where the motherboard ports are. If you case has a cut out where you can replace the template then almost any motherboard will fit the case.

Another consideration is how much you want to invest in the upgrade. You will have to consider the processor and the memory you want to install also.

And you have a new hard drives, are they IDE drives or SATA? Most new motherboards only support two IDE drives, your CD is IDE.

If you look at my Hardware Reviews I have a IDE controler that I bought and am not happy with it but it is the only one I could find at the time that was under $100. I need the IDE controler because I also have two IDE hard drives and two IDE CD/DVD drives.
