Mother board bad connection want to try and resolder

by Patty
(Christ Church, New Zealand)

For many months and some wasted money and time on some computer repair "experts" my problem has never been resolved.

It was originally a more intermittant problem and the first time I took it in for repair was told to wait until it got worse. I did, the problem became more frequent. However, the computer repair people couldn't get it to act up. So many wasted trips I decided I would like to try fixing it myself. (With expert advice of course).

Symptom: Push button to turn on and get one long beep and then it shuts down. Or, computer wont connect to monitor when first turned on and have to turn the computer off and back on again.
(Not very professional of me but after about 18 months and 5 trips to computer repair guy I gave it a smack with my fist and pushed the power button and it worked...for awhile). Then I took the cover off and pushed on the mother board, pushed the power button and it worked fine...for awhile. That's why I think it's a loose connection on the mother board. I told this to the computer repair person but they were uncooperative to resolder the mother board for me. They didn't even look at it.

My questions: when I disconnect the hard drives and everything else from the mother board. Solder it. Reconnect everything I disconnected from the mother board. Will there be any "setup" to do that will require a supergenious software, bios, etc person to get the computer operating normally?

Cold Solider joints
by: Support

Hello Patty,

What you are experiancing is a solider joint that opens up when cold and when it heats up it closes enough for electrictiy to flow.

You could go over the exposed joints with a solidering iron to 'freshen' up each solider joint.

You may or may not find the bad solider point.

Use this article as your guide for doing the touch up solider work -

Component Repair on a Motherboard

Disconnecting hard drives, cd/dvd rom, floppy, taking out the memory and any add on cards to do the work will not change anything as far as the setup of the comptuer is concerned.

When you are done with your touch up then just plug everything back in, if you fixed the cold solider joint it should start normally with out hitting the case or powering it up and down a couple of times.

You said it will give out one long beep when you power it up, check with the motherboard manufacture for the beep codes, this is a clue as to where the cold solider joint may be located.

Hope this helps...
