Hello John,

Considering you have checked the monitor on another computer then I would say it is the video device.

Is the video device embeded on the motherboard? Do you have a spare video card you can put in the computer to test the theroy?

You say it is over one year old so it is proabably out of waranty so doing your own work would be cheaper than getting a Gateway tech to look at it.

If you don't have a extra video card you can try taking the BIOS battery out, disconnect the power cord for five minutes or so (disapate any resdiual power on the motherboard that would keep the BIOS chip live).

Then, with the battery out, power up the computer, if the BIOS became corrupt disapating the BIOS will bring it back to defaut settings and may clear your problem.

So if that doesn't work what is cheaper - a new video card or a motherboard?

Hope this helps...
