Monitor screen went black

by David
(Booneville, Arkansas)

My son gave me his Dell Dimension 2400 after he got a virus. He deleted everything connected with the virus and deleted necessary drivers.

The screen was still usable but everything was to large and could not be changed.

So he went in and changed the monitor from system to automatic and the screen went dark.

What can I do ?

Video drivers
by: Suppory

Hello David,

When your son cleaned the virus he either didn't get it all or when he was deleting files he deleted the video drivers.

Your options are:

Try to fix the video drivers problem or reinstall the Operating System.

If you have the time then you could try replacing the video drivers from the Safe Mode. (These procedures come form the Self Computer Repair Unleashed e-book). To get in to the Safe Mode you have to press the F6 key when you start the computer, it may take a couple of tries to get in to the Safe Mode, log on with the normal user ID.

Once logged on go to the Computer Management console. Then drop down to the Device Manager. On the right hand side find Display Adapters and expand it, write down the name of the display adapter, then highlight the display adapter there, then right click on it, select uninstall, close the Computer Management console, restart the computer. Let the OS start normally, did the Starting Windows logo run? Can you see the log on prompt? If so log on, then go to the Computer Management console again and then the Device Manager. find the display adapters, is your adapter there? If it isn't you will have to go to the manufactures web site and download the drivers for your display adapter, then install them.

Then go back to Safe Mode and run your AV program to get the rest of the virus.

If this doesn't work then you will have to reinstall the Operating System (OS).

Hope this helps...
