Monitor goes black after 1 second

Without prior problems my monitor is now going to a black screen within 1 to 2 seconds of turning on the power. I confirmed the computer is actually working by turning of the monitor power button and then turning it back on. Is this a virus (definitions up to date and scanned) or a video card/monitor problem?

Hello Steve,

What it sounds like is the monitor is either having power problems (CRT) or if it is a flat screen (Plasma or LCD) the inverter is failing.

If you have another computer you could test it by connecting it to that, a laptop would work for testing the monitor, you wouldn't have to move it.

If it does the same thing on another computer then it is failing.

Now is it worth fixing? A CRT (old style tube type monitor) no, if it is a flat screen maybe if you can find the same make and model that the screen is damaged or has burn in and the person that owns it will give it to your for a fairly low price.

Otherwise, replace it and save yourself some time, unless you would want to learn how to open a flat screen and remove the inverter, I would suggest if you are going to do this do it to the oldest monitor first, then you will know what not to do to the good screen monitor.
