laptop screen hinge switch repair

by jennifer
(oregon)

I have taken apart a laptop. The little switch that tells the screen to turn of when closing is stuck off. I have two parts to this switch:

1. The toggle on the top (visable little thing sticking out that the screen closes on)

2. the little switch on the computer board inside the computer that does the action of turning the screen on and off.

How can I fix the switch on the board? Can I override the switch? I am thinking take the switch off the board and either soldering the connectors with a small bead of solder to connect then or using a piece of wire from one connector to the other?

It is not worth sending the computer in. It is to much fun taking it part and fixing it myself!

Hello Jennifer,

Two possibiltiies - Clean it or relpace it.

It could be that the switch is stuck, maybe some grit or something is jamming it.

You could clean it with Isopropal Alcohol (use Isopropal - it is pure alcohol no additives) and a can of compessed air. Use an old tooth brush and put a small amount of alcohol on the switch and use the tooth brush to move the alcohol around inside the switch. Use the canned air to clean out the alcohol and hopefully what is in it.

Do you have an Ohm Meter? You can test the switch with an ohm meter, one way will be open then the when toggle the switch it will be closed. So if you put one probe on one side and the other probe on the other side you will either see a reading or you will get infinity. Toggle the switch, does the ohm meter react? If it does it is fixed, if it doesn't then the switch is dead.

If the switch is dead you could find a replacement, a good source of replacement parts is eBay, you may find an old computer there that works but doesn't cost much then again you may find one that is just the case.

I don't think shoring out the switch (putting a piece of wire from one side of the switch to the other is NOT a good idea, the reason the video is truned off when the lid is closed is because of the heat factor, when it is open it gets enough cooling air to keep it cool, closing it and not turning it off will alow the heat to build up.
This could damage the comupter and is dangerious.

For parts www.LaptopRepairGuru.com has a nice selection.

Hope you fix it!
