Laptop overheating check
by: Support

Hello Scott,

You need to find out what is causing the computer to heat up then shut down.

I would suspect three things:

Battery
Processor/memory
Power Supply

To test this first put your hand on the battery, is it hot? If it is shut down the computer and remove the battery, power up on A/C only.

Did it get hot and shut down? No then it is the battery.

Yes then put your hand on the underside of the laptop, where is all the heat concentrated?

Find the lovers where the fan expels the hot air from the processor heat sink, next to that on the underside will be the processor/heat sink. Is that hot?

If it is then go to this page for instructions on cleaning the heat sink.

Cleaning a Laptop

If it isn't the processor/heat sink creating all the heat then it will be the power supply.

The power supply is usually close to where the A/C power adapter plugs in to the computer, feel along that area, is it hot?

If it is hot then your power supply is going to fail.

Is it under warranty? If it is then have it fixed, if it isn't you need to decide if it is cost effective to replace the power supply.

If you decide it is cost effective to replace the power supply you next task is to find a replacement, I would suggest you start with the manufacture, then if they are too expensive or don't have any search the internet for a replacement. Be aware that eBay sellers are not all trustworthy if you buy from there.

Hope this helps...
