Laptop Keyboard
by: Support

Hello Kathy,

When your laptop is at the lognon page when you do a ctrl-alt-del key press nothing happens?

If this is correct you can try:

A) An external key board, you will have to find a wired keyboard with a usb connector, most newer laptops do not have the old PS/2 style keyboard port. With the power off the laptop, plug in the keyboard. See if you can get in to the BIOS setup on the laptop. Usually you will see the keypress for accessing the BIOS setup when the computer starts, it may be F1, F2, the Del, or End key. Or any combination.

B) If you don't have access to an external key board try the above suggestion to get in to the BIOS.

If you can get in to the BIOS look for the keyboard settings, I have found that if the Fn key is on at start up and you accidently press the shift+scroll lock then the keys that are uio -jkl and m are number keys the same as on an external keyboard fro the number pad on the right hand side of the keyboard. Check the settings and if it is set to on if you don't use the Fn keys all the time set it to off.

Once you restart before doing anything press the shift+scroll lock sequence, on my IBM there is a light that has an arrow with a 1 inside it. This sets the alpha keys mentioned above to numbers the same as a key pad.

In you user id block try retyping your user id, does it come up as normal or with numbers when you use uio or jkl or m? If it does then press the shift+scroll lock again and see if the letters come up instead of numbers.

If you still can not type in the user id block then I am afraid your keyboard on the laptop needs to be repalced, they are not repairable.

For parts www.LaptopRepairGuru.com has a nice selection.

Hope this helps...
