Internet Speed Problem on My Computer

by Danny
(Coleman, OK USA)

Hello, I always try to fix my own problems, and sometimes beat my head against my computer desk in the process.

My computer problem is my Provider says it is working fine, but my computer has not got the word yet.

Along about the first of last month I started having Internet slow down problems.

It started with Internet pages not loading very fast, then went to email messages showing up with unopened HTML boxes that would slowly open.

Now, it takes forever for any email page to open except for text. I can nearly be sure when I try to open an Internet web page it will take forever, if it ever does.

I live in S.E. Oklahoma, the only reliable Internet connection comes to my house through an antenna.

It is a Broadband connection and when things are going right it is pretty fast, but if something goes wrong on my end I pay a heavy price listed above.

I have a Systemax Intel Core 2 Quad computer, with 4 Gig of Ram, running Win. 7 Pro. 64 bit. and upgraded to Internet Explorer 9 (ver. 9 works great), and it does most everything well except when you get to Online Operations (email and website stuff), then that is when it has it's problems.

My Internet Provider says they show my connection as "Smokin Fast", but the computer has not got the word yet.

I checked on any new drivers that may have come out recently, but Windows says I have all the newest and updated drivers and software.

My Upload and Download speed are nearly non-existent, almost not even registering.

If I had not already bought "Self Computer Repair Unleashed" and got such good information about computers I would have already quit, wiped my hard drive clean, and got rid of the silly thing. I am a gunsmith/advanced education in the field, and the computer just puts all the gun world information I need at my finger tips.

I need it bad and if I ever get my repair shop up and running, I will need it even more.

Once we get this problem with my Internet fixed, then I am going to need help with my Windows Live email!

Thank You,

Internet connect speed through satilitte.
by: Support

Hello Danny,

I would like you to check your Windows Firewall settings.

If you have it turned on try turning it off and see if that makes any difference in the connect speed.

If you have a router between the ISP modem and you computer check page 223 of the Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual and turn on the router firewall, then leave the Windows Firewall off (disable it in the Device Manager, under Services).

If you don't have a router and the connect speed is higher with out the Windows Firewall then the Windows Firewall is the problem, see page 226 of the Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual.

Next I would advise you to power everything down, Satellite modem, router (if you have one) and your computer, leave off for a few minutes.

Power everything up and then check the connect speed.

I use a program called DU Meter, download here: http://www.hageltech.com/dumeter/about

It is pretty accurate in the up/down load speeds, this one is a shareware version, use it to see how you are connecting and if you like it buy it.

One thing you should be aware of is that some of the bigger ISP's are throttling bandwidth (your up/download speeds) and I just heard about this today, AT&T is the big one DSL is 150 GB and the Premium is capped at 250 GB, so that may be an issue with your connect speed.

If you have a router insure your computer NIC is set for 100 Full Duplex (see page 38 of the Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual and go through the troubleshooting first then the repair steps second).

Last thing do you have the alignment program for the Satellite dish? Sometimes miss alignment will cause the signal to drop, reconnect, drop.

Hope this helps get your connect speed fixed...
