Installing Full Eddition of Windows-7 On New Hard Drive In Hp Pavilion Dv2500 Notebook!

by Kermit
(Alameda Calif. )

Monte,
9 days ago I Optomised a Hp Pavilion note book following your instruction in your books to a T. Had to install all service packs for Vista Home Perm. As well as all security up dates and up dates for Java, Adobe Reader 9.

There were 3 up dates that didn't install and Vista like XP keeps trying to install the up dates, every time you shut down the computer.I have noted that the computers will try to install the up dates 3 times and shut down after the 3rd attempt.

I made sure the laptop shut down before taking a 8 day job. When I returned the computer was in a different place. When I retevied it and turned it on after pluging in the power cord this message appeared: Fatial error cannot boot from hibernation press ENTER to contiue; I sat there and watched as a timer counted down seconds and the windows world thing appeared and a message: windows is installing phase 3 of 3 updates do not turn off or unplug your computer. Nothing else no install and would restart, then show the same over and over and over. Untill I did a forced shut down. Took a while but was able to get it to boot to safe mode but wound not self repair the system. Said to reinstall the operating system from restore.

As there were document etc. I wanted to save before doing so; I used my boot recovery disk to copy as many of the files to a different partiton of the hard drive. During this time the hard drive got so hot that it was burning my hand when I touched the case. Even took 3 attemps to get the boot disk to boot to recover the data. (I cannot belive that Hp would build a laptop that the vents below the hard drive sit on the flat surface preventing the venting of the heat; but they did!! (fan works.)

On the restart after removing the disk from the dvd drive it said:UNABLE to boot the due to loss or corruption of the system and could not get into safe mode to use the factory reinstall disk on the hard drive.

To make a long story short I have decided to install a new hard drive, additional memory and a fresh install of windows 7 home prem.

Past experance in install XP requried installing addition drivers from the mother board disk for the network CARD, video, and intel chip sets. I do not have the drivers disk and Hp web site is of little help. Your suggestions please.

Many thanks,

Kermit.

Upgrade from Vista to Windows 7
by: Support

Hello Kermit,

If you go to Windows 7 then some of the drivers you need will already be available.

To find drivers for specific devices such as the embedded network adapter or the video I would suggest you go to the manufacture not HP or you can do a search at this web site:

http://nodevice.com/

I agree that the hard drive should not get that hot when operating.

Have you considered installing a SSD? Internal Solid state disk - SSD I have them in almost all my laptops, only the two new ASUS laptops don't have them.

Hope this helps...

Thank you,

For some reason the hard drive cover instead of being flat is made so the vents when installed make contact with any flat surface you place the computer on even with the rubber feet making the vents useless.

Purchased a new 2.5" hard drive today to install the operating system. Will be getting an external drive case to try to retreve the information in the documents folder no user accounts except adnimistrator. Kept getting an error that I could not access the directory when using the recovery disk, and raw rescue is disabled on the latest boot disk of the company that disk I use.

Will try it again when I put the hard drive in the external case.

There is a hard disk dianostic's in the BIOS that I ran and the disk checked out ok; I set the laptop on some small boxes rasing it off the table 1 inch and the hard drive didn't get hot for the 94 minute test.

Will check the website for the drivers if I am not able to get the system to work.

Thanks again.

Kermit

Reply, Hard Drives Don't Match.
by: kermit

The WD 320 gig 2.5 inch hard dirve i purcahsed today does not match the built into the motherboard Pin conectors. The original hard drive is a Fujuitsu MHW2160BH PL and I have no idea as to what to do other than return the new hard dirve to where I purchased it for a refund.

To make maters more difficult Fujuitsu has turned their hard drives devision to Toshobia. Now getting a replacement is getting more difficult, as is the idea of not installing the new operating system on the original hard drive which will cause me to loose the documents. That I was wanting to save. Haven't been to Hp.com to see if they have a replacement or and up grade but have downloaded their manual for the computer and it actually shows you how to take the laptopt apart and re assemble it. Also list their replacement hard drives, at the time the notebook was manufactured??

So far my search on the internet has come up with some interesting but not so positive results.

Checked Newegg.com; nope.

Any suggestions you have are welcome.

HP Pavilion replacement Hard drive
by: Support

Hello Kermit,

Accordint to the documentation found here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/CoreRedirect.jsp?redirectReason=DocIndexPDF&prodSeriesId=3369414&targetPage=http%3A%2F%2Fbizsupport1.austin.hp.com%2Fbc%2Fdocs%2Fsupport%2FSupportManual%2Fc01295820%2Fc01295820.pdf (download the pdf before opening it, otherwise it will just hang and never open).

The hard drive is a standard SATA hard drive and any 2.5 SATA hard drive by any manufacture should fit in the bay and attach to the interface.

What drive did you buy?

Hope this helps...

Small successes.
by: Kermit

Well Monte,
I'm back, well I ordered a replacement hard drive of the same kind as was installed on the computer a fujitsu exact replacement and installed it.; learning in the process that there was an adaptor that was removeable and that it is a standard sata hard drive. Enough said on that.

Spent several hours installing new drivers for hardware; software after a fresh install of Windows-7 Home Prem.

Also upgraded the memory to 3 gigs. Seams to run pretty well.

Thanks for all your help and have a good new year.

Kermit
